Sierra Foothills is a large California AVA established in 1987 under 27 CFR Part 9, spanning the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada from El Dorado County south through Amador and Calaveras counties. Elevation ranges broadly across the appellation, creating varied growing conditions. Old-vine Zinfandel planted during California's nineteenth-century gold rush era represents a notable portion of the region's COLA label history.
